What is life insurance and how does it work?

So, how does life insurance really work?

Even though most of us would hate to leave the financial burden of our end-of-life expenses behind, according to our research report, more than a third of Canadians don’t have life insurance.

Here’s the thing – life insurance is a handy financial tool for all kinds of families (if we do say so ourselves). In a nutshell, life insurance coverage gives your loved ones a payout after you pass away to help them financially when you’re no longer around. In return, you pay premiums each month that are based on a few things about you, like your age, health and how much coverage you need. Easy peasy!

We don’t want anyone to miss out on the benefits, so let’s take a closer look at how it works, shall we?

We’ll send you a free information brochure with everything you need to know about North Cover.

What does life insurance cover?

Life insurance is designed to support your loved ones financially when you’re no longer around. The payout can be used to help your family maintain their lifestyle and cover costs such as mortgage payments, education fees and final expenses.

North Cover Life Insurance provides flexible coverage between $100,000 and $1.5 million for Canadian residents aged between 18 and 70 (excluding Quebec). Our licensed advisors can help you choose coverage based on your needs and budget.

Our policies can also cover natural death and accidental death. Plus, if you’re diagnosed with a terminal illness, we’ll give you 100% of your benefit amount upfront1.

How do I get life insurance?

To get life insurance coverage, you’ll need to go through an application process. At North Cover, we make this as simple as possible, because we know you have more exciting things to do.

Here’s how it works:

Apply

It’s easy to get a quote from one of our licensed advisors. We’ll ask a few questions about you, including how much life insurance coverage you think you’ll need.

We’ll assess

Our team will look over your application and assess your eligibility for coverage based on your age and the coverage amount you’re looking for. Once you’re approved, we’ll issue your policy and you’ll be covered.

When to get life insurance

At North Cover, we offer life insurance to Canadian residents aged between 18 and 70 (excluding Quebec). That can cover a lot of people at very different stages of life, so here are a few ideas for when you might want to consider life insurance:

  • You bought a new home (woo!) and have a mortgage to pay: If your family can’t count on your income anymore, life insurance could be a way to help them still stay in your home, without worrying about future mortgage payments.
  • You’ve got a full house: Food, clothing, education, sports, vacations. The costs can get pretty high when you’re raising little ones. Life insurance can help cover the bare essentials (and beyond) if you aren’t around to support them.
  • You’ve got loved ones who could use a hand: Even beyond a partner or dependants, you may have other family members or friends you’d want to have financial security after your time has come. If you’d love for your favourite people to have a little more cash to put toward their dreams, life insurance can help cover these costs.
  • You simply like being prepared: You know that life is unpredictable – that’s what makes it fun, but the future can be fickle, too. Life insurance can cover you for a terminal illness1 (in which case we give you your benefit right after a diagnosis), as well as natural or accidental death.

Who gets the money from a life insurance policy?

North Cover lets you choose up to five beneficiaries to receive the payout from your life insurance policy. Not quite sure who to pick? Get the details on how to choose a beneficiary.

In the case of a terminal illness diagnosis, you will receive your full benefit amount upfront1. Your Policy Document covers all the specifics.

How the claims process works

Just like the process to get a policy, we try to keep the claims process simple for everyone involved too. Once your beneficiary contacts us to submit a claim, we will work with them to make the process as straightforward as possible. After the claim is approved, your beneficiary (or beneficiaries) will receive the lump sum payment to the value of your coverage amount.

We also offer an advanced funeral benefit up to $15,000 (subject to approval), so your loved ones could have money on hand quickly to help pay for expenses that come up within the first few days of your passing.

Check out our claims page for more information.
